During the Sa Ladakh Biennale, Ladakh transforms into a unique meeting point of art, culture, landscape, and conversation. This journey is designed to experience the region through photography and slow travel — moving beyond the usual tourist route into monasteries, remote villages, mountain roads, local interactions, and Biennale spaces spread across the Himalayas. With a small group and thoughtfully curated experiences, the program offers a more immersive and visually rich way of exploring Ladakh.

Trip Itinerary

Arrive in Leh, the heart of Ladakh, surrounded by dramatic Himalayan landscapes and centuries-old monasteries.
As this is a high-altitude destination, the first day is intentionally relaxed to allow proper acclimatization. After check-in and some rest, we step out for a slow exploration of Leh’s old town — wandering through narrow lanes, traditional mud-brick homes, prayer wheels, cafés, and local markets.
The evening is designed to ease into the rhythm of Ladakh while offering the first opportunities for atmospheric photography and observation.
Overnight in Leh
After an early breakfast, we head out to explore some of Ladakh’s iconic monastery landscapes.
We visit monasteries such as Thiksey Monastery and Hemis Monastery, where prayer halls, monks, architecture, mountain backdrops, and spiritual rituals offer rich visual opportunities.
Depending on the Biennale programming, we also explore installations or cultural spaces connected to the festival along the route.
The day balances landscape photography, cultural experiences, and slower observational shooting rather than rushing between locations.
By evening, we return to Leh for a relaxed dinner and photography discussions.
Overnight in Leh
Today, we journey deeper into Ladakh, driving through dramatic mountain landscapes towards Lamayuru, home to one of the region’s oldest monasteries and the famous “moonland” landscapes. Along the way, we photograph ancient villages, monasteries, and everyday life in the Himalayas before continuing to the beautiful village of Tingmosgang for the night.
Today we drive westward along the Indus River toward the beautiful Dah Hanu region, home to the Brokpa community and one of the most visually distinct cultural regions of Ladakh.
The journey itself is spectacular, with dramatic mountain scenery, small villages, monasteries perched on cliffs, and changing landscapes along the route.
Upon reaching the Dah Hanu region, we spend time walking through villages, interacting with locals, and photographing daily life, traditional attire, apricot orchards, and the unique atmosphere of the Aryan Valley.
This part of the trip adds a strong human and portraiture element to the overall experience.

Overnight in Tingmosgang
After a relaxed morning in, we will explore the Sham Valley region — one of the quieter and more scenic parts of Ladakh.
Unlike the busier tourist routes, this region allows for slower travel and deeper engagement with the landscape. We visit villages, monasteries, local cafés, and cultural spaces while continuing to photograph the atmosphere and daily rhythms of life in the Himalayas.
We may also encounter Biennale-related spaces, artists, or installations along the route, depending on the final festival programming.
The pace today is intentionally unhurried, allowing time for conversations, creative reflection, and photography without pressure.
Overnight at Tingmosgang
After a relaxed morning in Tingmosgang, we make our way back towards Leh, stopping along the way to photograph the landscapes, villages and everyday life of Ladakh. En route, we may visit places such as Basgo with its dramatic fortress ruins, the beautiful Indus–Zanskar confluence and other hidden corners of the Sham Valley.
Upon reaching Leh, we spend time exploring the old town, local markets and traditional lanes — capturing the colours, culture and daily life of this Himalayan town.
Overnight in Leh
Today we continue exploring the cultural side of Ladakh, visiting lesser-known monasteries, villages and spaces connected with the Ladakh Biennale. We photograph the region’s unique blend of ancient traditions, contemporary art, landscapes and everyday life.
The day also allows time for revisiting special locations, working on your photography, and reviewing images from the journey. In the evening, we gather for our final discussions and celebrate the experiences and stories created during the workshop.
After breakfast, transfer to Leh airport for departure.
The journey concludes, carrying with it not just photographs, but a deeper experience of Ladakh through art, culture, landscapes, and meaningful moments encountered along the way.

About Abhishek

The founder of Unique Photo Adventures, Abhishek Hajela, is a National Geographic Travel Photographer based in New Delhi and recipient of the prestigious International Nikon Award.

Mentored by John Isaac, former Head of the UN Photo Department, Abhishek refined both his artistic vision and technical depth, transforming his passion into a distinguished career. Today, he curates and leads photography journeys and bespoke travel experiences in collaboration with respected global partners.

His work has appeared with leading brands and publications including National Geographic Traveller, Lonely Planet, Nikon, and Outdoor Photography, with features across major Indian publications such as The Hindustan Times, The Hindu, Mail Today, and Mint Lounge.
