Sunrise on the Ganges
A rowboat out onto the river before dawn — mist, silhouetted ghats, and temple spires catching the first light. The single most iconic Varanasi frame, and it only really works in that first hour.
Street Life on the Ghats
The steps themselves, dawn to dusk — barbers, chai stalls, wrestlers training at the akharas, kids flying kites, pilgrims mid-ritual. Varanasi's ghats are essentially one continuous street photography set, with more unguarded human moments per square metre than almost anywhere else in India.
The Old City's Narrow Lanes
Vishwanath Gali and the maze of alleys behind the ghats — sadhus, marigold garlands, cows, and centuries-old architecture pressed into impossibly tight frames.
Early Morning Boat Ride
Before the city wakes, glide out onto the Ganges by rowboat as the sky turns from grey to gold — the ghats, temples, and bathers along the shore slowly emerging out of the mist. The stillness of the water and the softness of first light make this the single most rewarding hour of the entire workshop.
The Burning Ghats, Approached with Respect
Manikarnika and Harishchandra ghats, photographed only with a guide and genuine sensitivity — not a spectacle, but among the most powerful and humbling scenes in India when handled properly.

This ancient city, nestled on the banks of the sacred Ganges River, is a vibrant tapestry of colors, culture, and history. From the bustling ghats, where pilgrims perform rituals and ceremonies, to the labyrinthine alleyways teeming with life, every corner of Varanasi presents a captivating scene waiting to be captured. The golden hues of dawn over the river, the intricate architecture of ancient temples, and the rich traditions of the locals provide endless opportunities for stunning and evocative photographs. Trip Itinerary

A short morning flight brings us to Varanasi. After check-in, the afternoon is free to settle in before we head out for the evening's centrepiece: the Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat, where priests perform a synchronised fire ritual to the river each evening at dusk.
We will position ourselves ahead of the crowds — on the steps and from a boat on the water — for both the wide, crowded spectacle and the tighter, flame-lit portraits that make this one of India's most photographed rituals.
We arrive in Pushkar by evening, in time to check in and take a first, unhurried walk down to the ghats of Pushkar Lake as the town settles into its evening rhythm — bells, bhajans, and the last light on the temple spires.

Before dawn, we take a rowboat out onto the Ganges — the classic Varanasi image, mist over the water, the ghats and temple spires silhouetted as the first light hits the eastern bank. This is the best hour of the day for the river, well before the heat and the crowds arrive.

We approach Manikarnika and Harishchandra — the city's cremation ghats — with a local guide and the appropriate care and distance this requires; this is a place of mourning first, and a photographic subject only with genuine respect and, where required, permission.
We close the day back on the water, watching the Ganga Aarti one more time — this time from a boat mid-river, for a vantage few visitors ever see.
We return at midday to rest through the heat, then head back out in the late afternoon for the fairground's second wind — dusk light, cooking fires, and the fair settling into its evening rhythm.

One last walk along the ghats at first light — our final chance for the quiet, unpeopled frames that are hardest to find once the day gets going.
After breakfast and check-out, we transfer to Varanasi airport for the flight back to Delhi. Trip ends on arrival in Delhi.

About Abhishek
The founder of Unique Photo Adventures, Abhishek Hajela, is a National Geographic Travel Photographer based in New Delhi and recipient of the prestigious International Nikon Award.
Mentored by John Isaac, former Head of the UN Photo Department, Abhishek refined both his artistic vision and technical depth, transforming his passion into a distinguished career. Today, he curates and leads photography journeys and bespoke travel experiences in collaboration with respected global partners.
His work has appeared with leading brands and publications including National Geographic Traveller, Lonely Planet, Nikon, and Outdoor Photography, with features across major Indian publications such as The Hindustan Times, The Hindu, Mail Today, and Mint Lounge.
