Once a year, the sands outside Pushkar fill with over fifty thousand camels, cattle, and horses, and the herders who have walked them in from across the Thar Desert. It is one of the world's great livestock fairs and, for four days, one of the most photogenic places on earth.

This is a quick, focused escape built for exactly that window — timed to land as the fair opens, before the weekend crowds peak, with no long multi-city loop. Delhi to Pushkar and back, entirely by road.

Trip Itinerary

We set off early from Delhi, driving southwest through Haryana and into Rajasthan, breaking journey en route for breakfast and a stretch. As the highway gives way to the open Rajasthani countryside, the pace of the trip changes — camel carts, turbaned herders, and roadside dhabas signal we are close.
We arrive in Pushkar by evening, in time to check in and take a first, unhurried walk down to the ghats of Pushkar Lake as the town settles into its evening rhythm — bells, bhajans, and the last light on the temple spires.
A day to find our footing in Pushkar before the fair itself begins. Sunrise on the ghats — one of the few times of day the fifty-two bathing ghats are quiet — followed by a walk through the old bazaar lanes, known for silver jewellery, textiles, and the constant motion of sadhus and pilgrims drawn to this sacred lake town.
By afternoon, the fairground on the edge of town is already stirring — the first camels and traders arriving, tents going up on the dunes. We spend the evening here as the light turns gold, watching the fair take shape a full day before it officially opens.
The fair officially opens today, and we are on the fairground from first light — the coolest, softest light of the day, and the best time to find herders and animals before the crowds build. Camel races, decorated animals, and the everyday theatre of one of Asia's largest livestock markets unfold around us.
We return at midday to rest through the heat, then head back out in the late afternoon for the fairground's second wind — dusk light, cooking fires, and the fair settling into its evening rhythm.
One last dawn on the fairground — our final chance for the quiet, unguarded moments that are hardest to find once the fair is in full swing later in the week.
After breakfast and check-out, we begin the drive back to Delhi, arriving by evening. Trip ends on arrival in Delhi.

About Abhishek

The founder of Unique Photo Adventures, Abhishek Hajela, is a National Geographic Travel Photographer based in New Delhi and recipient of the prestigious International Nikon Award.

Mentored by John Isaac, former Head of the UN Photo Department, Abhishek refined both his artistic vision and technical depth, transforming his passion into a distinguished career. Today, he curates and leads photography journeys and bespoke travel experiences in collaboration with respected global partners.
